Built In Box Gutters

Built in box gutters.

Built in or box gutter. Unfortunately being unseen often results in neglect. There is more information on this later. Essentially a sloped wooden box is constructed then lined with metal.

In many cases however a built in or box gutter may be what your house originally had and what it should have now. Perhaps the first use of built in gutter systems was seen in old churches or other places of worship. Most commonly the systems were built into the eaves edge or cornice of the roofing system. Built in gutters also referred to as box gutters are considered a concealed roof drainage system.

I have a mid century 1952 single story house with an all but flat roof slight pitch very slight and the gutters are not carrying the water all the way along the gutters to the downspout. K style gutters for houses built after 1950. Unlike aluminum gutters they are part of the roof structure. Since they are not readily visible they typically don t alter the historic character of buildings and don t detract from or conceal decorative cornice details.

I am having a problem with my gutters. Box gutters or built in gutter systems are typically found on older historical homes in cincinnati and northern kentucky.
