If you re building a traditional picket fence you can use pre made picket fence panels or you can attach pickets to horizontal rails.

How to build a picket fence measure.
That is the height of the top of a standard 2 4 joist hanger available from your local building supply store.
Starting at one corner mark where you want the post to go.
Use a line level a water level or a regular level and a helper to make sure your string line is level.
Figure out where you want the gate to go and mark posts at least 4 feet apart.

Measure the area for the fence and draw a line using spray paint or use stakes and strings to mark the area.
Mark every 8 feet for the posts.

To securely set the posts fill the bottom of your hole with a layer of gravel and place the post in the hole.
1 install and trim posts.
Use a miter saw or miter box to cut the end of each board at an angle then secure the boards to the back of the gate using wood screws.
Set the posts in concrete and space them as desired but no more than 96 on center.
It is not necessary to fill the hole with concrete all the way to the top.
Use a post level to ensure the post is plumb and pour concrete to hold the post in place.
